Sunset on a Secret | Sam + Greg's Proposal

They ran through the vines, they laughed, and he got down on one knee. Sam and Greg’s surprise proposal captured in the golden light of Traverse City.

When Greg first reached out to me about an engagement session in Traverse City, I was immediately excited—not just because I love shooting in TC, but because this was going to be a surprise. He had a plan, a vision, and I knew I had to get it just right. From the moment we started planning, I could feel his excitement through every message. There’s something really special about capturing a moment that someone has been dreaming about for months, and I wanted to honor that.

Greg chose Chateau Chantal, perched up the peninsula with vineyards stretching under the late summer sun. The elevated view was perfect for a sunset, with rows of vines creating natural lines that frame every shot beautifully. As I scouted the spot and hid behind a tree, my nerves were high. Not because I didn’t trust myself, but because I cared so much about capturing every little detail perfectly. Where should I stand? How would I move without being seen? Could I get the right angle to capture the emotions?

When the moment finally arrived, I watched Greg kneel down, and the world seemed to pause. Sam’s smile lit up the entire vineyard. It was radiant, uncontainable, the kind that makes your heart skip a beat. That instant—the pure joy on her face—was everything I had hoped to capture. Once she noticed me, they shared a gentle kiss, and I stepped out to get close-up shots of the happiness, laughter, and excitement swirling around them.

After congratulating them and letting them soak in the moment for a few minutes, we moved to the gravel walkway between the vines. The prompts were simple, but meaningful. They were just enough to let their personalities shine. They laughed, whispered little jokes to each other, and ran up and down the rows of vines, completely effortless and completely themselves. It’s moments like that—the natural, candid joy—that make these sessions so special to photograph.

The lighting that evening was perfect, the kind that softens edges and gives everything a golden glow. The energy of the vineyard, combined with Sam and Greg’s happiness, made it feel calm yet uplifting. I found myself grinning behind the camera as much as they were in front of it. By the end of the session, I knew we hadn’t just captured photos; we had captured the feeling of love, connection, and pure joy in a single evening.

Moments like these remind me why I do what I do: not just to take photos, but to capture stories. To capture the way someone looks at the person they love, the small gestures that mean everything, and the kind of joy that lasts far beyond the click of a shutter. Shooting Sam and Greg that evening wasn’t just photographing a proposal... it was being part of a story they’ll remember forever.
